do i sign myself up for SAT or do i have to sign up through my counselor?

im a junior and my school doesnt talk much about the SAT and i have no idea where to start. Do i just go directly to collegeboard.org to sign up or do i have to sign up through my school/counselor? can u please explain the process to me? thanks
